Calgary - Grasslands/River
Although much of the grassland is now devoted to ranching and urban development, protected areas — both within the city
and outside it — are havens for the naturalist.
In this region, the prairie grasses grow taller than in the more arid prairie to the south and east. Here, hawks and eagles
soar above the hills, cacti flower on the uplands, and bighorn sheep gather against river canyon walls. Along the many creeks
and rivers, beavers, muskrats and a variety of birds thrive in dense mixedwood and poplar forests.
