Updated Application Form; New Process Guidelines and Class Protocol
– Added March 2012
Persons, agencies or institutions wishing to conduct research involving wildlife
in Alberta must obtain a Research Permit or Collection Licence from the Fish and
Wildlife Division of Alberta Sustainable Resource Development (SRD).
All data collected under the authority of a permit are to be returned for submission
into the Alberta provincial Fish & Wildlife Management Information System (FWMIS)
database using the appropriate FWMIS data forms.

Fisheries
Persons, agencies or institutions wishing to conduct research or inventory involving
fish* in Alberta must obtain a Fish Research License (FRL) from
the Fish and Wildlife Division of Alberta Sustainable Resource Development (SRD).
This applies to all federal and provincial government agencies, researchers, consultants,
and individuals who collect, hold or sample fish for research, educational, inventory
or promotional purposes in the province.
All data collected under the authority of an FRL are required to be returned for
submission into the Alberta provincial Fisheries and Wildlife Management Information
System (FWMIS)database. Appropriate FWMIS data forms are to be completed and returned
to the FRL issuer.
*Federal Fisheries Act: "Fish"; includes
- Parts of fish,
- Shellfish, crustaceans, marine animals and any parts of shellfish, crustaceans or
marine animals;
- The eggs, sperm, spawn, larvae, spat or juvenile stages of fish, shellfish, crustaceans
and marine animals
Fish or Wildlife research or collection within or including Alberta Provincial Parks*
Persons, agencies or institutions wishing to conduct research involving wildlife
that occurs within or across Alberta provincial park boundaries must apply for a
Research and Collection Permit from the Alberta Parks Division.

When applications are reviewed, the Fish and Wildlife Division and the Parks Division
will jointly determine any special conditions that will become part of an issued
permit.
Applicants should also be prepared to upload to the Parks’ on-line system any other
applicable licenses or permits as may be issued by the Fish and Wildlife Division.
*Provincial Parks is an inclusive term for lands in the following categories:
- Ecological reserves
- Heritage rangelands
- Natural areas
- Provincial parks
- Provincial recreation areas
- Wilderness areas
- Wildland provincial parks
- Wilmore Wilderness Park
