Wildfire Science Crew Member

Salary Range: $20.48 - $25.21 per hour

what it takes to work outside in a wide range of weather conditions in remote wilderness locations? Are you detail oriented
and enjoy hands on work?
If so, a Wildfire Science Crew Member position may be an ideal seasonal position for you.
A Wildfire Science Crew Member is responsible for assisting with field sampling work for the Fire and Vegetation Monitoring
Program throughout the Alberta Forest Protection Area. The objective of this program is to collect detailed field information
in order to build a decision support system for prescribed burn and firesmart planning.
Position Qualifications
Minimum Recruitment Standards
- High school diploma plus one year post-secondary education or training in forestry, natural resource, or environmental
science program.
- Six months related field experience conducting forest and/or vegetation related sampling.
- 18 years of age.
Education & Experience Preferred
- Valid Standard First Aid with CPR**
- Valid Class 5 Drivers License**
- Valid Defensive Driving Certificate**
- Fire behaviour knowledge
- Knowledge of the Incident Command System
- Radio operation
- Helicopter safety
- Bear/wildlife safety
- Orienteering and surveying skills
- Plant identification, forest mensuration and vegetation sampling skills
- Excellent problem solving, communication and organization skills

Completion of a fitness test may be a requirement of this position.
Roles & Responsibilities
- Be aware of OH&S policy and adhere to high standard of safety in the work place. This includes being present for regular
safety briefings.
- Demonstrate professionalism and dress in accordance with the SRD departmental uniform policy.
- Maintain open lines of communication with other crew members.
- Collect fuel load and vegetation data for Fire & Vegetation Monitoring Program and fire science research projects.
- Maintain accurate and high quality data collection.
- Assist crew supervisor with compiling completed data sheets at end of each shift.

Wildfire Science Crew Supervisor

Salary Range: $21.17 – $26.15 per hour

takes to work outside in a wide range of weather conditions in remote wilderness locations? Are you detail oriented and
enjoy hands on field work? Do you have experience supervising field staff?
If so, a Wildfire Science Crew Supervisor position may be an ideal seasonal position for you.
A Wildfire Science Crew Supervisor is required to perform a variety of duties. Along with overseeing sampling work with
your crew for the Alberta Fire and Vegetation Monitoring Program, you will determine crew schedules based on SRD area priorities,
liaise with SRD field offices, manage your assigned workload, ensure crew safety and maintain accurate inventory reporting.
Position Qualifications

- High school diploma plus one year post-secondary education or training in forestry, natural resource, or environmental
science program.

Roles & Responsibilities
- Determine work plan and sampling locations for each shift based on provincial and SRD Area priorities.
- Collect fuel load and vegetation data for Fire & Vegetation Monitoring Program and fire science research projects.
- Ensure accurate and high quality data collection among crew members.
- Compile completed data sheets and submit to Fire Science Technologist at end of each shift.
- Assist with staff training and mentoring.
- Assist with data entry.
- Assist with map making
- Assist with booking accommodations and rotary wing transportation.
- Provide frequent work-progress updates to respective SRD Area Duty Officer/WPO/WOO/WSF and Edmonton FireSmart Vegetation
Management Specialist.
- Ensure crew members are aware of OH&S policy and adhere to high standard of safety in the work place. This includes district
check-in/check-out procedures and regular safety briefings.
- Ensure crew demonstrates professionalism and dresses in accordance with the SRD departmental uniform policy.
- Maintain open lines of communication with crew members and senior staff and ensure timely conflict resolution.

If so, a Wildfire Science Lab Technician position may be an ideal seasonal position for you.
A Wildfire Science Lab Technician is responsible for processing fuel moisture and fuel load vegetation samples collected
by field crews for the Fire and Vegetation Monitoring Program. The objective of this program is to collect detailed field
information in order to build a decision support system for prescribed burn and FireSmart planning. By processing samples,
maintaining quality records and providing assistance with data analysis you will be playing an essential part in this exciting
program.
Position Qualifications
